The generator is a mechanical equipment that converts other forms of energy into electrical energy, and the mechanical equipment driven by diesel engine is called "diesel generator".

In 1897, the world's first diesel engine was born in Augsburg, Germany. It was invented by Rudolf Diesel, the founder of man company. The English name of diesel engine is the founder's name diesel.

Man company is the most professional diesel engine manufacturing company in the world, with a maximum unit capacity of 15000 kW. It is the main power supplier of marine shipping industry. China's large diesel power plants also rely on man companies, such as Guangdong Huizhou Dongjiang power plant (100000 kW). Foshan Power Plant (80000 kW) is provided by man company. The world's first diesel engine is stored in the exhibition hall of the German National Museum.

In the cylinder of the diesel engine, the clean air filtered by the air filter is fully mixed with the high-pressure atomized diesel injected by the fuel injection nozzle. Under the upward extrusion of the piston, the volume is reduced and the temperature rises rapidly to reach the ignition point of the diesel. When diesel oil is ignited, the mixed gas burns violently, and the volume expands rapidly, pushing the piston down, which is called "work". Each cylinder works in sequence according to a certain order, and the thrust acting on the piston becomes the force driving the crankshaft to rotate through the connecting rod, so as to drive the crankshaft to rotate.

When the brushless synchronous alternator is installed coaxially with the crankshaft of the diesel engine, the rotation of the diesel engine can be used to drive the rotor of the generator. Using the principle of "electromagnetic induction", the generator will output the induced electromotive force and generate current through the closed load circuit.

Only the most basic working principle of the generator set is described here. In order to obtain usable and stable power output, a series of diesel engine and generator control, protection devices and circuits are also needed.
