Sen. John Barrasso (R., Wyo.) on July 29 introduced a draft of the U.S. Nuclear Infrastructure Act 2020 (ANIA) to maintain U.S. leadership in advanced nuclear reactors, and Republicans in the House of Representatives have introduced similar legislation.

ANIA won support at a legislative hearing on August 5th. ANIA mainly includes the following contents:

(1) Empower the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to lead the development of advanced nuclear reactor design regulations in international forums;

② Codify the Trump administration's proposal to authorize the NRC to reject imports of Russian and Chinese nuclear fuel on national security grounds;

③ Establish awards to encourage the successful licensing of next-generation nuclear technologies and fuels;

(4) Require the NRC to identify and update regulatory barriers to accelerate the realization of advanced nuclear technologies;

(5) Approve a targeted credit scheme to protect nuclear plants at risk of premature decommissioning;

⑥ Authorizing a uranium stockpile to ensure that the United States does not lose its ability to use domestically produced fuel to fuel its nuclear reactors.
